In line with the objective of achieving EU climate neutrality by 2050 in an effective and fair manner, the European Green Deal proposed a Just Transition Mechanism. The Just Transition Mechanism focuses on those regions and sectors that are most affected by the transition given their dependence on fossil fuels or greenhouse gas-intensive industrial processes. The Czech Republic relies heavily on solid fossil fuels with high CO2 emissions, which poses difficulties in reaching climate neutrality. The transition process to climate neutrality is expected to mostly affect communities dependent on the coal mining and coal-fired energy sector. The purpose of this DG REFORM-funded project is to provide technical support to stakeholders, who are responsible themselves for the development of key components of the territorial Just Transition plans for three coal mining regions in the Czech Republic.
